Solar Self Drive

Solar-powered EV charging · UK-wide

Drive on sunshine.

Your roof can make the fuel your car runs on. Solar Self Drive designs and installs solar-powered EV charging for homes and businesses — panels, batteries, carports and smart chargers that let you charge your electric car from your own sunshine instead of the grid.

Own your miles

Electricity from your own panels has no unit price — you paid for it once, in the array. Charge the car from it and a large share of your driving becomes genuinely free, while surplus you export is paid for through the Smart Export Guarantee.

Charge while you're parked

Cars spend most of the day sitting still. A smart charger quietly feeds them surplus solar as it's made, and a battery banks the rest so you can top up after dark — no forecourts, no queues, no rapid-charger prices.

Built around your car

Your roof, your driveway and the way you drive are all different. We size the panels, battery and charger to them — from a single home charger to a solar carport or a full fleet setup — so nothing's over-specified or left short.

What we do

Who it's for

Solar-powered charging isn't one product. It's a fit for a driveway, a rural plot or a depot — here's where it makes the most sense.

You've gone electric — now the bills have followed

You love the car; you're less keen on the home electricity bill it brought with it. Solar turns that new load from a cost into the reason your panels pay off faster.

You don't have solar yet

Most people we help start with a bare roof. We design the panels, charger and any battery together, so the whole setup is built for charging a car from day one.

The grid doesn't reach where you park

A remote home, a paddock, a holiday let or a work site with no suitable supply. Off-grid solar and battery charging turns 'we can't charge here' into an EV location.

You run vehicles for a business

A van fleet back at the depot by day, or a workplace car park full of staff EVs. On-site solar is often the cheapest fuel a fleet can buy — and a visible ESG win.

The savings angle

The cheapest miles you'll ever drive

Public rapid charging can cost several times what you'd pay at home — and charging at home from the grid still means buying every kilowatt. Charging from your own solar changes the maths, because the electricity your panels make has no unit price at all.

We won't invent a savings figure for you — it depends on your roof, your tariff and your mileage. Instead we survey your property and give you a personalised estimate you can actually rely on.

  • Free daytime miles

Surplus solar goes straight to the car at no unit cost.

    Paid for what you export

Surplus you don't use earns money via the Smart Export Guarantee.

  • Cheap off-peak top-ups

A battery and a smart tariff fill the gaps at the lowest overnight rates.

Questions drivers ask us first

What is solar EV charging?

It's charging your electric car from electricity your own solar panels generate, rather than buying it from the grid. Panels on your roof or a carport power the home first, then a smart charger sends the surplus to the car — so a good part of your driving runs on free daytime sunshine.

Do I need to already have solar panels?

No. Most of our customers start from scratch — we design the panels, any battery and the smart charger together as one system. If you already have solar, we can add a compatible smart charger, and a battery, to it.

Can I still charge on solar if I'm out all day?

Yes, with a battery. It banks the midday sunshine so you can charge the car in the evening, and on a smart tariff it also tops up from cheap off-peak grid power overnight — so the car is ready each morning whether you were home in the sun or not.

Do you install, or just give advice?

We design your solar EV charging setup and arrange the whole job — survey, quote and installation by qualified, accredited installers. You deal with one team across the full chain from panels to plug. We reply by email; there's no phone line and no cold-calling.
