A solar-plus-battery-plus-charger package brings the three parts of a solar-powered driveway together as a single, coordinated system: panels to generate, a home battery to store, and a smart EV charger to deliver it to the car. Designed together from the start, they share one control strategy — so daytime sunshine is captured, stored and used at the right moment instead of being sold back cheaply and bought back dear.
It is the most complete way to drive on sunshine. Solar alone charges the car brilliantly on bright days you are home; adding a battery means the sun you caught at midday can charge the car at 8pm, and the house keeps running on stored solar long after sunset.
How the package charges your car day and night
- 1 By day, the panels power your home, charge the battery and feed the car if it is plugged in and the sun is strong.
- 2 Surplus that would otherwise be exported is stored in the battery instead of sold at a low export rate.
- 3 After dark, the battery discharges to run the house and can help charge the car from sunshine banked earlier.
- 4 On a smart tariff, the battery also charges from the grid during the cheapest overnight hours, ready to power the morning.
- 5 The system prioritises your own stored solar first, then cheap off-peak grid, and only ever uses expensive peak-rate electricity as a last resort.
Getting the most from every kilowatt
A battery lifts how much of your own generation you actually use — your 'self-consumption' — from roughly a third with panels alone to the large majority once storage is added. Combined with a time-of-use EV tariff, it lets you buy electricity only when it is cheapest and lean on your own supply the rest of the time.
Both the solar panels and the battery currently qualify for 0% VAT on domestic installations in the UK, and some systems can keep essential circuits running during a power cut. Frequently asked questions
Why add a battery if I already charge the car from solar?
Without storage you can only charge the car from solar while the sun is out and the car is plugged in. A battery banks the midday surplus so you can charge the car in the evening, keep the house running after dark, and avoid selling power cheaply only to buy it back at peak rates later.
Can I add the battery and charger to panels I already have?
Usually yes. Most existing solar arrays can be retrofitted with a battery (via a hybrid inverter or an AC-coupled unit) and a smart charger without affecting your existing Smart Export Guarantee registration. We assess your current setup and recommend the neatest way to integrate the extra components.
