Solar EV Charging

Home Solar EV Charging

Home solar EV charging — solar panels paired with a smart home charge point so your electric car runs largely on free daytime sunshine instead of grid power.

Charge your car from your own roof

Home solar EV charging pairs solar panels on your roof with a smart home charge point, so the electricity that fills your car comes from your own generation rather than the grid. On a bright day the panels can run the house and send the surplus straight to the car — electricity you have already paid for once, in the panels, and never pay a unit rate for again.

It is the natural next step for anyone who has switched to an electric car and is tired of watching the home electricity bill climb. Instead of charging from the grid at whatever your supplier charges, you charge from daylight. A well-matched system lets a typical commuter cover a large share of their yearly mileage on sunshine alone, with off-peak grid top-ups filling the gaps in winter and after dark.

How home solar EV charging works

  1. 1 We survey your roof, your consumer unit and your driveway, and ask how far you drive and when the car is usually plugged in.
  2. 2 Solar panels are installed and connected through an inverter that powers your home first, then has electricity to spare.
  3. 3 A smart charge point — typically a 7kW unit — is fitted where the car parks, wired to sense that spare solar.
  4. 4 In solar or 'eco' mode the charger uses only surplus generation, ramping up and down as clouds pass so nothing is wasted to export.
  5. 5 When the sun is not enough, the charger can top up from a cheap off-peak overnight tariff, so the car is always ready in the morning.

Why homeowners pair solar with their EV

An electric car is the single biggest electrical load most homes will ever add. Charging it from your own panels turns that load from a bill into a benefit: the more you drive, the more value your solar array returns. Surplus you do not use for the car is still paid for through the Smart Export Guarantee, so the panels earn their keep whether the car is home or not.

Domestic solar panels currently carry 0% VAT in the UK, which keeps the up-front cost down, and a home charge point is far cheaper to run than public rapid chargers — before you even count the free daytime miles. Every property is different, so we tailor the panel count, inverter and charger to your roof, your car and the way you actually drive.

Frequently asked questions

How much of my driving can I really cover with solar?

It depends on your panel size, your mileage and when the car is home during daylight. A commuter who charges at weekends and on remote-working days can cover a large share of yearly miles from solar, with cheap off-peak grid charging filling the rest. We size the system around how you actually drive so the estimate is realistic, not optimistic.

Do I need a special EV charger to use solar?

Yes — a smart charger with a solar or 'eco' mode. It senses the surplus electricity your panels produce and diverts it to the car, ramping up and down as generation changes so you charge from sunshine rather than the grid. Most current 7kW smart chargers support this; we confirm compatibility with your inverter during the survey.
